About Frederick

I'm an emeritus professor at UC Berkeley and now teach regularly at Stanford Continuing Studies. My PhD is from Princeton. I have interests and expertise across the humanities including philosophy, political theory, literature, and art.

I enjoy helping students who are ambitious, curious, or stuck. My teaching style is conversational. I'll ask you questions, push back on loose claims, and help you find what you actually want to say. Parents: I'm happy to meet briefly before the first session to talk about goals.

I teach the way I taught at Berkeley and still teach at Stanford Continuing Studies: by explaining carefully, posing questions, and treating students as capable of real thinking.

Lessons are one-on-one, held over video, and built around whatever you're actually working on — a draft, a prompt, a practice test, a book you're reading for class, an idea you can't quite get a grip on.

My approach is practical. We'll look at real claims and arguments, yours and other people's, and talk about why some work and others don't.

The first meeting is a conversation about what you're trying to do. Bring whatever you're working on, or don't bring anything and we'll figure it out together.
