About Tom
I live and breathe philosophy; it is how I've made a living since 2015.
In addition to 7 years experience teaching philosophy (at University of Auckland and Massey University), I am an active writer & researcher in philosophy, with a recent (October 2022) publication on my area of specialty in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, entitled "Epistemic Conditions of Moral Responsibility." I write on blame, ignorance, and morality. I have also given 17 different philosophy talks at seminars and conferences across New Zealand, and in Australia and the United States of America, since 2017.
I'm looking to supplement my income (as an existing part-time tutor at Massey University) through private philosophy tutoring.
My beautiful wife, baby daughter, and I live in Swanson, Auckland. Outside work, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, keeping active outdoors, drumming, playing football, and reading fantasy fiction.

Philosophy is all about evaluating answers to life's biggest questions (e.g., "who/what am I?" "what ultimately exists?" "how should I live my life?" "how do I know anything at all?"). I help to facilitate student-led philosophical inquiry by alerting students to key thinkers and ideas, discussing the reasons that there are for and against key ideas, and asking open-ended questions to help shape future inquiry. I am also available to give more specific advice on projects and assignments.
Tutorials are typically one hour-long and are designed for high-school students and older.
Qualifications: I have a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Auckland (2021), a Graduate Diploma in Arts from the University of Auckland (2015), and a Bachelor of Theology from Laidlaw College, Auckland (2013).
Experience: I have been teaching philosophy since 2015. I am currently employed as a part-time Tutor at Massey University, where I have taught courses in critical thinking, social and political philosophy, metaethics, and epistemology since 2020. During my postgraduate and doctoral study at the University of Auckland (2015-2021), I was hired as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, teaching in the above areas, as well as in ethics, epistemology, philosophy of religion, theology, and some areas of metaphysics (philosophy of mind and personal identity). The University of Auckland also hired me as a fixed-term Professional Teaching Fellow (2021) to teach courses in ethics and political philosophy. All of these subjects I can teach.

Tom was my tutor for a Philosophy of Religion class at uni. There was a great balance of presentation and discussion in his classes, and his communication was such that it broke down complex ideas in understandable and applicable ways. Most importantly I think was his natural passion for philosophy which shone through in his teaching. I’d add that he would be able to comfortably represent varying views on a different subject in a balanced way, allowing us students to digest and reason our way around different perspectives. A dream tutor who made the learning process a joy!
