About Melissa
I recently graduated from UC San Diego with a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering. I have experience in tutoring high school students in Physics, Math/Calculus, and Chemistry. I have helped my students improved 2 letter grades compared to when they first started with me. I believe I have the ability to help my students really build their foundation and understanding in Math and Science that can serve them even into college-level courses.

Remember, it is not about how much your tutor knows. The tutors might know a lot but are lacking in their ability to relate to students or explain a concept. It is about communication. *My typical process for working with a new student:
It is important for me to understand how students think or approach a problem. I ask the students to first walk through a problem by themselves and ask me questions as they have it.
"Are you confused? Which part?"
"Are you completely not know where to start?" - That is ok!
"Do you know which topic this is on?"
"Have you seen this type of problem before?"
After establishing a baseline of where the student is, I would proceed to ask a few questions (that can be used as clues!) to let the student think about how to approach the problem by themselves.
Sometimes the students actually are not certain where they are confused and it is my job as their tutor to figure out where it is that things stop making sense to them. Once we figure that out together, I can build that foundation and present to the student different methods to approach that same type of problem. I find that student finds their breakthrough once they find that 1 method that makes the most sense to them.
Generally, I avoid giving out the answers for their homework and practice problems but rather, I give them all the information and resources they need to develop their own critical thinking/understanding of how to approach and solve a problem by themselves. I believe I am there as a resource to bounce their ideas off of, as well as someone who can evaluate student's way of understanding concepts in order to help them in the most efficient way
