About Chris

Hi! I'm Chris, a private tutor offering expert tuition in Microsoft Excel for professionals, students or anyone else looking to boost their skills or get help for tasks they're struggling with. Although I specialise in Excel, I can also help you or someone you know to master other Office software such as Word and PowerPoint.

Teaching has always been something I've wanted to do and I know from experience that I'm good at explaining things, so tutoring is the perfect way for me to be able to do just that! I know from my professional experience that there are a lot of people out there who, with a bit of guidance and just a few simple techniques, would get so much more out of Excel, and I'm excited to be able to help you and others to show you just what you can do. You may be surprised and wowed when you realise what you're capable of!

I have 10 years of professional experience working as a statistician for Royal Mail up until November 2025. In that role, I worked on and analysed datasets containing hundreds of thousands of records in Excel on a daily basis, used advanced Excel features and VBA to create efficient and professional spreadsheets, and wrote my own functions. I also prepared bite-size Excel training sessions and became the go-to person amongst my colleagues when they needed help with doing things in Excel.
So you'll be being taught by someone highly experienced with using Excel to its full potential, and who knows how to explain Excel to beginners and less experienced users.

I'm fully insured and have an enhanced DBS certificate, which I'll be happy to show or provide a copy of on request.

About the lesson

I offer tuition both online and face-to-face, and both 1-1 and small group sessions (max. 5 students*).

Your first session with me will be a 30-minute discussion where we’ll get to know each other a bit and talk about your current skill level in Excel, what you want to be able to do and the things that you need help with so I can plan how best to help you achieve your aims. All subsequent sessions will last for 1 hour.

There are 3 core principles which underpin my approach to tutoring:

1) Show you why
We'll go through each topic in detail right from the very start. Together, we'll explore the details of how Excel works and interprets data and see exactly how the various functions work. That way, you'll get a real sense of how everything fits together, realise how to adapt what you've learnt to your work/studies, and feel like you truly understand Excel - because you do!

2) Do what works
When it comes to using Excel, I’m a big believer in keeping things simple and sticking to reliable systematic approaches that work every time. I'll introduce you to simple, easy-to-follow techniques for performing tasks which you can readily apply to your own Excel use to turn daunting tasks into ones you can complete confidently.

3) Practice, practice, practice
There's only one way to get good at Excel - to use it a lot! Therefore, you'll be tasked after the session with practising what you've learnt to build your confidence in the topic. You have to put the effort into this if you want to succeed - I can't do everything for you!

Online Excel sessions will normally be carried out via screenshare on Teams. I also use some additional software to show you my keyboard and mouse inputs - I can provide instructions prior to a session on how to download and install this software to show me your keyboard and mouse inputs on request.
