About Thomas
PLEASE NOTE, I DO NOT OFFER A FREE FIRST LESSON
Hi, I'm Thomas! I am 21 and I have just graduated with a first class honours History degree from Durham University, UK. Whilst at Durham, I achieved the highest marks of any historian in the University in all three years of study. This resulted in me being awarded a Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship, the university's most prestigious academic award, for two consecutive years. These achievements speak to my historical knowledge and analytical ability, which I am now looking to share with school and fellow university students.
My success at Durham built upon achieving 10 A*s at GCSE, 4 As at AS Level and 2 A*s and an A at A2, in English Literature, History, and German. I achieved an almost perfect grade in my A-Level English Literature examinations, and have honed the essential skills of literary analysis and essay writing during the course of my degree.
I have recently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL) conversion course, during which I received distinctions in all eight modules.
I look forward to working with students of all ages and abilities, not only to improve their grades but also to stimulate their intellectual enthusiasm. For me, this enthusiasm is an integral ingredient of academic success.
Tutoring Experience:
I spent a year teaching English and Maths face-to-face to primary and secondary school-aged children. This role required me to plan my lessons extensively, consulting with parents and children on extant problems and desired outcomes. I tailored my teaching to my students’ individual learning characteristics, drawing upon oral, written, and visual methods to communicate effectively. I also provided homework materials, to ensure that in-class progress was entrenched and to allow my students to rapidly achieve their learning aims. One parent commented that 'my children loved it...they really liked him and the way he explained things.' I intend to redeploy the skills and approaches I developed in this role to online tutoring, to allow my students to achieve their learning aspirations regardless of their past achievements or academic level.
Last summer, I also taught briefly on First Tutors UK. I helped my student to catch up with his English Literature and History content, on which he had fallen behind due to the pandemic. This involved weekly sessions on poetry and Macbeth for English Literature, and Stuart history in History. His uncle informed me that he is now excelling in these subjects.

Tutoring Approach
I am deeply passionate about History, and engendering this same intellectual enthusiasm in my students is integral to my approach. I believe that it is this intellectual passion which motivates students to undertake the additional reading and investigation so often required to achieve the highest grades at A-Level and university.
Simultaneously, my teaching builds upon my students' individual needs. My tuition will be structured around what you feel requires work, be that content knowledge, analytical skills or something more specific. Whilst I believe that university-style tutorial discussions, not often a part of secondary school students' learning experience, are particularly fruitful arenas for academic development, I am equally comfortable reviewing and providing written and/or oral feedback on plans or completed essays. Ultimately, I will formulate my approach on a case-by-case basis, facilitated by a (free-of-charge) discussion with each student/parents before beginning teaching.
