About Caleb

I want to share my enthusiasm for the magic of photography, both the technical and artistic aspects of taking great photographs. After working as a Curator for many years, I retrained as a professional photographer at the prestigious Canberra Institute of Technology, graduating in 2016 with a Distinction for my final folio in fashion & food photography. Since then, I've worked for commercial clients in fashion, portraiture & food photography. My work has been published in the UK, Australia, Europe and Russia. Photography is an enormously rewarding pursuit & I want to help students to reach their full potential as photographers.

About the lesson

I am a fully trained photographer with a commercial and fine art practice. My lessons involve explanation of manual controls, practical tips, feedback on images, and shooting exercises. My goal is to mentor, build student confidence, guide students through different styles of image making, & encourage students to explore their camera as an artistic tool. As a former curator and art historian, I can also help students understand key phases in the history of photography. I have an easy going, conversational approach. I can structure lessons to target skills or competencies a student most requires help with. DSLR photography can seem a little daunting to new learners and I believe it is important to relax students, and allow them to realise the powerful machine they hold in their hands can be experimented with and will not break. Students often remember best by doing: ISO or aperture or shutter speed can be explained as a concept, but once students actually take a satisfactory 'low light' portrait of their own and see the power of these 'controls' in action then proper understanding is achieved.

The session was just what I needed and has instilled me with more confidence. Caleb has vast experience and knowledge of his subject which ensures you that you are in safe hands. I had very productive, interesting and wide-ranging conversation with Graham via WhatsApp (our first lesson was an opportunity to get to know each other and locate areas to focus on during our in-person tuitions). Graham is beginning his DSLR journey and is keen to develop technical knowledge and familiarity with his camera system. He already understands certain concepts, which is helpful, but now I know I can teach the exposure triangle and talk about depth of field, when we meet in-person next week and it will be well received. It was a pleasant and useful first lesson.
