About Caroline

As a professional actor, my work includes the RSC, West End, fringe, radio, television and film. I've been teaching theatre skills, public speaking, presentation skills, speech and accent improvement, and general confidence, for more than ten years to individuals as well as in schools and theatre groups.

PUBLIC SPEAKING:
Public Speaking is a skill which is becoming increasingly useful and relevant in people's lives - be it for work presentations, at a conference, online, or more informal settings.

I believe the best speakers are, more often than not, a confident, centred, vibrant version of themselves.

However reaching that level of confidence and being able to communicate in a way that engages your audience, takes practice and guidance - so that you can arrive at the stage of being able to walk out there and just speak, naturally, with energy and connecting with your audience.

ACCENT IMPROVEMENT:
I also help people who wish to define and improve their English accent. I've had a lot of success with both foreign and native speakers, helping them to achieve more accurate pronunciation, ironing out any accent related grammar problems, as well as working on stress, intonation and fluency.

My innate accent is RP (‘received pronunciation’, sometimes called BBC, standard, or Queen's English).

I will give you recordings to practise with between lessons, recorded specifically for you, using the content we cover during each session.

PERFORMANCE:
With performance, drama and acting, I tend to work as you would in a rehearsal, on the hoof and doing it. It’s easier and you get more done - it’s more energised - and more fun!

One of my strengths is helping actors and students make their way through Shakespeare: understanding the text, using the language and verse to support the speech, clarifying the thoughts that carry through the lines, and ultimately making it real.

GENERAL
All my lessons, whether they are for Public Speaking, accent improvement, theatre skills, Shakespeare, or simply sessions to help you build your confidence - are all entirely based on what you bring to me as a student and what your aims are. I work with people of all ages and ambitions; shy, confident, inexperienced or professional.

With any scenario, being able to see and hear what’s happening and give bite-size practical hooks - is something I do quickly and easily - as well as being able to offer the more detailed skills and insights accumulated over years as an actor. Often really straightforward, they’re the sort of things that enrich and lift a performance, a speech, or a simple but important interaction - and students are often fascinated by the insights they learn about themselves and others.

Whatever you're after, the best thing is simply to get in touch and we can have a chat about what you want. I am always happy to give advice.

English

Speech, accents, confidence. Online.

People come to me with quite a range of requests, often accent related or to do with various questions or concerns around self-confidence.

I always used to teach in person - and there’s no doubt that it is a more holistic experience. But teaching online (following the pandemic) has proved to have different advantages and offer different insights which have been really useful.

In either case, if the lessons are accent or intonation related, I will give you recordings to practise with between lessons, recorded specifically for you, using the content we cover during each session.

My own accent is British RP (‘received pronunciation’, sometimes called BBC, standard, or Queen's English).

The skills required for everyday speaking are very different from those used in reading or writing (our brains process language differently depending whether we need to code and de-code thoughts and words into a written/read format, or whether we can rely totally on our ear). However I have found there are often benefits in using both experiences to teach our brains what to listen out for - and so familiarise ourselves with more intuitive sound patterns as well as learn the more technical aspects. Either way, what we’re aiming for is a natural, truthful response or rendition in spoken English - whether you’re reading, presenting or just talking off the cuff with other people, employers or friends.

All my lessons, whether they are for accent improvement, public speaking, theatre skills, Shakespeare, or simply sessions to help you build your confidence - are all entirely based on what you bring to me as a student and what your aims are. I work with people of all ages and ambitions; shy, confident, inexperienced or professional.

But with any scenario, being able to see and hear what’s happening and give bite-size practical hooks - is something I do quickly and easily - as well as being able to offer the more detailed skills and insights accumulated over years as an actor. Often really straightforward, they’re the sort of things that enrich and lift a performance, an ordinary conversation, a speech, or a simple but important interaction - and students are often fascinated by the insights they learn about themselves and others.

Whatever you're after, the best thing is simply to get in touch and we can have a chat about what you want. I am always happy to give advice.

Please Note: I try not to teach at weekends - not least because I'm rarely available. Please bear this in mind as I can't share my availability with you until after we are in contact.

Details

Sorry, limited editing options on "rates", so here are more details: Packs aren't really a thing the way I teach, but the website gives these automatically! You can have as many or as few lessons as you like and I just charge for the time I spend working with you. With "travel costs" there is no option to put "at cost" which is what it would be, rather than the default £0. However normally sessions are either online or clients come to me in TW1. PLEASE NOTE - I try not to teach at weekends - not least because I’m rarely available!
