About Jean-Jacques

Greetings,

I am a freelance animation director of French-Taiwanese origins, who worked 15 years in the business, and who started teaching animation 2 years ago.

I did all my studies at La Cambre, in Brussels, then I was living and working in Taiwan for the last 12 years, where I worked 8 years in animation, then 4 years as a photographer-videographer, and in the same time, as a part-time teacher for the last 2 years in Taipei National University of Arts, the most prestigious art school in Taiwan (a bit like our la Cambre, the made in Taiwan version of it).
Being recently back in good old Brussels, I'm now opening classes here to teach everything I've learned on both sides of the globe, with some emphasis on my photographic experience, which helps a lot in staging the art and the mood of a scene via the importance of composition and light and shadows.

Animation is an art that includes many other arts:
- writing, as in script writing and dialogue;
- drawing (obviously);
- sculpture, if you want to make films in stopmotion
- photography, for the composition, and the atmosphere via the shadow and the light, as mentionned earlier.
- and music, of course, if you want to find the fittest mood for the film, as well as the rhythm.

As you can see, animation is a fascinating world where you never stop learning.

And that may seem daunting at first.

Admittedly, animation is not made for everyone, and I do not necessarily expect anyone enrolling in my class to become the new Disney (I certainly am not myself), but that's actually precisely the point : In the world of animation, there is a vast and vibrant world outside of Disney and the Japanese anime that is there to captivate the imagination, and I look forward to you discover, and why not? Even join it.

My classes will be gradual. Since animation is an art that requires a lot of knowledge, I will teach them one after the other, in successive waves. Some classes will include screenings of animated films, often short films, to give ideas and inspirations, then we will go to the practical part, with classes and exercises of drawing (often), photography (sometimes), and narration, both told and visual. In short, it will be a very complete course that will affect many things, which will delight the most curious of you who like to learn a lot of things in a fairly compact period of time. Also, I will always announce in advance what will be the subject of the next class, so if you prefer to follow specifically drawing lessons, you can decide to come only to drawing lessons, and similarly for photography classes, or visual storytelling, etc.
