About YY

I was born in China but came to England at 15, I studied at University of Cambridge and am currently a freelance artist working in London for 10 years. I also had 10 years of Chinese calligraphy apprenticeship in China and won varies national gold awards. Such practice greatly informs my drawing skills and aesthetic awareness. I was tutored in London for three years by members of Royal Society of Portrait Painters to focus on portraiture. My work was short listed in Mall gallery portrait exhibition as well as private commissions. I also hold great interest in philosophy and music which I believe provides deeper artistic value in the creation process.

During xmas locked down 70 days before school reopened, I taught for free everyday for 40 mins for 3- 65 year old which was a fascinating experience for everyone. All recorded on youtube and we made 735 paintings together. I really loved it how I could help open up the minds how making beautiful artworks made many happy. I was also very inspired by every one of them.

About the lesson

I am open to give lessons to all age groups and have taught students from age 3. It is amazing how much potential anyone has regardless of age, once they unlock their mind and learn how to see and express. I am especially inspired by young "unpolluted" minds.

Great visual art is like music and other expressive language, there is structure, improvisation, conflicts, and the balance of harmony, melody, rhythm and connection with audience. Once you see that, the most important thing is the content of what you want to say.

I believe some study from master's work is essential to sharpen the tools you need to allow you to express yourself. So I always encourage to learn from masters (per my youtube channel), to see why they managed to evoke what they want powerfully in a structured way. Addition to this the most important is the way you see interesting things, and what interests you. I will find artists which that could open your mind in your style and hopefully bring your work to a more powerful level.
