About River
I'm a cellist and scholar from Texas now living in Brooklyn, NY. I earned my B.A. in Music with Recognition in Cello Performance from the University of Texas at Austin, where I studied with Prof. Bion Tsang. As a student, I performed with the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, the Bereket Middle Eastern Ensemble, and the Butler Opera orchestra. In addition to my orchestral performances, I've also played in numerous chamber ensembles, including SoundProof, a concert premiere of numerous works by young composers. As a soloist, I am drawn to study and perform forgotten works and works by composers from marginalized backgrounds.
I've taught cello lessons for 2 years now, and am excited to continue teaching both online and in-person in New York. I approach teaching with a commitment to student success, but even more importantly to joy. I want you to love cello as much as I do, and I will do all I can to ensure a positive learning and performing experience!

My goal is to equip young musicians with the skills they need to excel on their own terms. I emphasize mental practice techniques which enable better understanding of the music and the ability to make informed expressive choices. I also teach methods of releasing tension to play more effortlessly and avoid the risk of overuse injuries.
From my own experience, I know that students are not always passionate about standard repertoire, so I strongly encourage exploration of new and non-traditional music. In my career I’ve premiered several chamber works, commissioned multiple solo works, and performed in various genres including popular music, Middle Eastern music, and electronic music. Anything my students want to learn I am excited to teach, and I have resources to enable students to find music they are passionate about.
In our first lesson, we'll get to know each other and discuss your musical background and aspirations. You'll also play a bit for me so I can assess your ability. We'll talk about repertoire preferences, materials, practice plans, and other resources to help you succeed. Most lessons will include etudes (assigned weekly for most students), part of a Bach suite, and part of a concertante or sonata work, though I am flexible with repertoire choices as I want you to enjoy the music you're playing!
