About Michael
I grew up listening to rock music and taught myself to play guitar and piano as a child. I studied music composition and received a Bachelor's degree (BM) from West Chester University of Pennsylvania ('02). I then earned a Master's degree (MM) from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati ('05) where I studied minimalism and jazz arranging. I followed that by attending the University of Southern California (USC) Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program ('07). My professional career began at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions. From there I spent 5 years working directly under composer John Powell. During that period we scored a ton of animated films including: 'How To Train Your Dragon', 'Rio', 'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs', 'Mars Needs Moms' & 'Happy Feet Two.' I continue to work and write with film composer Germaine Franco. In 2016 I started a production music catalog, Velvet Green Music, which provided pre-cleared licenses of music for film & television projects. To date VGM has released 300 full production music albums. In-between writing projects I also run the music composition fellowship at Santa Monica High School. This program touches on music theory, music history and music technology while introducing students to new musical genres and teaching our young minds to interpret and speak critically about the music they love.

Beginning with a solid foundation in music theory we explore the genres and applied techniques that interest students most. I am a student of all sound and focus much of my student/mentor collaborations learning how to work with both acoustic and electronic musical instruments. I meet students where they are in their music journey. As such, we spend time listening to music the students love. We analyze the elements, break down the structures and learn what individual components of music contribute to each song/track. I am trained as a film composer but also produce records and compose concert music. I utilize all the latest tech gadgetry in my workflow and can help students navigate what compositional tools work best for them. Each lesson comes with a takeaway and assignments to get the students' creative juices flowing. I look forward to hearing the music in you. Thank you for being creative.
