About Dr Anneke

Hi! I'm Anneke, a qualified teacher and EFL tutor based in Devon, but teaching online. I hold a PhD in Education; I'm bilingual in German and English, so I know from personal experience what it takes to think, write and live in more than one language; and I've been tutoring privately for over 20 years—working with teenagers, university students and adults at every level.

Whether you're preparing for a Cambridge or IELTS exam, building the English skills you need for work or study, or simply wanting to feel more confident and natural in everyday conversation, I'd love to help you get there.

My teaching adapts to you. Sometimes that means structured grammar work. Sometimes it's conversation practice, close reading, or project-based learning. What stays constant is that your goals shape the sessions, and I meet you wherever you are.

I've spent more than a decade teaching and developing courses online, so remote lessons feel completely natural to me. And because I also work as a journalist and writer, I bring a real feel for how English works in practice—the idioms that trip people up, the subtle differences in register, the gap between textbook English and the language people actually use.

What I love about one-to-one tuition is that it lets me build a genuine relationship with each learner. That trust is what makes it possible to teach in a way that's truly tailored to how you think, learn and grow.

Qualifications:

—PhD in Education, University of Exeter
—PGCE in Secondary Education with Qualified Teacher Status, University of Exeter
—MA in Religious Studies (Distinction), University of Chester
—BA (Hons) in Humanities with Philosophy (First), The Open University

I also spent some time working in the British school system and conducted doctoral-level research on education in English schools. During this time, I co-authored a student textbook and a CPD handbook for teachers and teacher educators.

About the lesson

So, what would an English lesson with me actually look like?

That depends entirely on you. Every learner is different, and I always start by finding out where you are, where you want to go, and what kind of learning feels right for you. From there, we build a plan together.

Here's what I can help you with:

—Grammar and literacy: from the basics through to advanced sentence structure
—Reading and listening comprehension: using real-world texts, podcasts, news and film
—Conversation and speaking confidence: building fluency at your own pace
—Writing skills: from short exercises to extended academic or professional writing
—Exam preparation: Cambridge (FCE, CAE, CPE), IELTS, Trinity, and other recognised qualifications

If you're a professional looking to sharpen your English for work, you're especially welcome. Maybe you need to present more confidently, write clearer emails, or prepare for an English-language interview. Whatever your reason, I'll make sure the lessons feel relevant and practical.
