About Joel

In conclusion, my philosophies of learning are shaped by personal experiences, doctoral research, and the core principles of active communicative language instruction. My personal experiences helped me to understand that the best teachers connect with students on a deep level, provide them with high expectations, and then create learning environments for students to succeed and flourish. My doctoral background provided me with the theoretical frameworks of behavioral science towards motivating and engaging students, cognitive design of lesson plans to maximize student retention of information, and constructive lesson planning that amplifies student cognitive knowledge-building abilities. Finally, communicative language learning embodies the best methods of language learning over the last two centuries including the use of deductive, adductive, and inductive forms of language instruction that provide students with both formative language skills and interactive language fluency.

About the lesson

My teaching philosophy is based on personal experiences, doctoral research, and communicative language acquisition principles. I believe students need to set personalized language goals and then instruction should be aligned to achieve those goals. My lessons use behavioral , cognitive, constructive instructional principles. Behavioral design means that I use game mechanics to create playful and gameful strategies such as leaderboards, point systems, mysteries, quests, treasure hunts, and poison pickers to make learning challenging, fun and interesting. Cognitive lesson strategies are used to regulate classroom activities to properly sequence and scaffold instruction so that students can more effectively process information into long-term memory centers. With constructivism I give students the opportunity to make decisions, choose learning paths, and make growth-related risks towards deeper cognitive achievement. I also believe in communicative competence, which means my students develop form-focused grammar skills in combination with personalized interactive language skills to achieve language fluency.
