Hello, my name is Carolyn Xu, and I am a passionate bilingual educator based in Melbourne, Australia. I am an IPA-certified Senior Chinese Language Teacher and an experienced University English Lecturer, with extensive experience teaching students from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.

Fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English, I specialize in helping students build confidence, improve communication skills, and achieve their personal or academic language goals. My teaching style is patient, encouraging, and highly personalized, ensuring that every learner feels supported and motivated.

About the lesson

My techniques and teaching methodology

I adopt a student-centered and interactive teaching approach, tailoring each lesson to the learner’s goals, level, and interests. My teaching combines clear explanation, practical communication, cultural understanding, and confidence-building exercises.

For Chinese learners, I focus on pronunciation, vocabulary expansion, grammar application, conversation practice, Chinese cultural context and real-life communication skills.

I believe learning a language should be effective, engaging, and enjoyable, so I incorporate real-life scenarios, multimedia resources, and personalized lesson plans into my teaching.

Typical length of a lesson

My standard lesson length is 60 minutes, which allows enough time for structured learning, practice, and feedback.

I also offer:

45-minute lessons (ideal for younger learners or busy professionals)
90-minute intensive sessions (ideal for exam preparation or accelerated progress)

My qualifications / experience as a tutor

I am an IPA-certified Senior Chinese Language Teacher and have worked as a University English Lecturer, with extensive experience teaching both Chinese and English to learners from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.

With strong bilingual proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and English, I understand the challenges language learners face and can explain concepts clearly in either language. My teaching experience includes:
