About Avelia
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have had many years of success teaching theory students.
As a performer I have worked in most genres, from classical to jazz, West End shows, soca, Latin, African & funk bands, both live and recordings.
As a teacher, I work in several Junior and Secondary schools, as well as maintaining a private practice. I teach many beginners, both children and adults, as well as working with more advanced players (Grade 8/diploma and beyond).
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes. I hold a current DBS certificate - a requirement for my school teaching.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and took my B.Mus in conjunction with London University. I have since had occasional lessons with many trumpet "names" such as John Wallace, Bobby Shew, Arturo Sandoval.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Musicians' Union and the International Trumpet Guild.

Hello! I studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and am a professional trumpet player with many years' teaching experience.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach music theory up to Grade 5 ... and beyond, for those few brave souls who wish to take further theory exams!
I teach all brass instruments - trumpet is my specialism.
I also teach piano; and am occasionally asked to give extra tuition in aural tests to students learning other instruments to help them in that aspect of a forthcoming exam.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I hold a B.Mus (London), LRAM (Teacher) and ARCM (Performer)
- How much do you charge?
I charge £45 per hour. I recommend hour-long lessons for theory so that we can delve into the subject in the depth required. The majority of people have theory lessons for just a few terms - this depends on how much knowledge the student already has; and how much independent study time they put in, in between lessons.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from my home studio, which is on the Buckinghamshire/ Bedfordshire border. The nearest town is Leighton Buzzard, but I am also not far from Aylesbury, Milton Keynes etc.
I also teach online, usually via Zoom, but have used various other online platforms to suit my students.
- When are you available?
In general, the parents of my school-age students prefer to have a set time and day per week for lessons, whereas my adult students may prefer to arrange times and days to suit on a more ad-hoc basis to accommodate work commitments. I am happy to teach most days and times, to suit students - please contact me to check availability.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages (currently 6-89!), and all levels.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
ABRSM theory exams (Grades 1-8).
The majority of music theory students will have been playing an instrument for a few years and then discover they need to pass grade 5 theory in order to progress to grade 6 and beyond in their chosen instrument. It is, therefore, likely that they will have gathered some theory knowledge already.
My normal practice is to require students to work through a few practice papers from the early grades to check what they already know, and discover any areas that we need to cover, since each grade builds on the previous one. I rarely ask students to sit an actual exam for the earlier grades, although for some it may be appropriate to do so.
I take most students through the workbooks for grades 4 and 5, and aim to have covered all the material required before the beginning of the term in which they will take the grade 5 exam. That term will then consist of working through as many practice papers as possible before the exam in order to be thoroughly prepared.
I teach many students to pass Grade 5 theory, and a few choose to go on to the higher grades.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Some students question the need for the theory qualification. As we work through the levels, most come to realise that it is merely an extension of the knowledge they have already acquired, or would need to acquire in the future, to assist with learning and playing their instrument.
The theory of music is very logical, and approached in the right way, it is a relatively straightforward exam to pass.

I met Avelia through friends. I told her I regretted not learning to play piano as a child and would she consider giving a 60 yr old lessons. Avelia is a very encouraging teacher who gives praise where praise is due. The lessons are designed to meet my personal goals and always fun.
I have been having lessons from Avelia for many years. She is a very calm and patient teacher of great ability. On the other hand, I must be a nightmare to teach.
I would recommend this lovely lady to anybody seeking trumpet lessons for themselves or family members.View more recommendations
