About Dylan

My musical journey began at the age of nine when I first started playing drums. Within five years, I was performing at some of the UK's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall and Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. These early experiences gave me the opportunity to perform alongside exceptional musicians and helped shape my passion for music from a young age.

Since then, I have worked as a professional session musician, touring across Europe and performing in countries including Germany and Hungary. Throughout my career, I have recorded and performed with a variety of artists, gaining valuable experience across many different musical styles and settings. These opportunities have allowed me to develop a versatile and practical understanding of music that I now bring to my teaching.

Today, I work full-time as both a professional musician and music educator. Alongside teaching, I regularly perform throughout the UK with theatre productions, function bands, and live music projects. Being an active performer means I am constantly applying the concepts I teach in real-world professional environments, allowing me to offer students genuine insight into both the artistic and practical aspects of a career in music.

About the lesson

Music theory lessons are tailored entirely to the individual student. Whether you want to learn how to compose your own songs, prepare for graded theory exams, or simply gain a deeper understanding of the music you love, lessons are designed around your goals and interests. For exam preparation, I use official theory workbooks, past papers, and piano-based learning to help visualise theoretical concepts in a practical way. Rather than simply memorising answers, students learn how each concept fits into the wider framework of music structure and composition. I provide clear, step-by-step guidance to ensure every topic is fully understood and can be applied confidently, helping students achieve the highest possible results, including Distinction grades.

Composition lessons focus on developing a deep understanding of how melody, harmony, rhythm, and structure work together to create compelling music. We explore the theory behind chord progressions and analyse songs chosen by the student to understand how professional composers and songwriters craft their music. Students then apply these techniques to create their own original material. Lessons also cover rhythm, groove, melody writing, and stylistic approaches across a wide range of genres. Piano skills are incorporated throughout to help students both hear and visualise musical concepts. For those interested in music production, I also teach the fundamentals of Logic Pro and GarageBand, enabling students to record, arrange, and produce their own music.

I graduated from Leeds Conservatoire in 2021 with a degree in Jazz Performance (Drum Kit). I hold Grade 8 qualifications in both Guitar and Drums, as well as Grade 6 Music Theory. With over three years of teaching experience, I have worked with students of all ages and abilities in drums, guitar, piano, music theory, and composition. I currently teach privately, online, and at Yorkshire College of Music, delivering engaging lessons both in person and remotely for children and adults alike.

I offer 60 minute or 30 minute lessons.
