About Josh
I have over 10 years’ experience teaching privately and in schools, and have taught students aged 7-77! Each lesson has a positive and encouraging atmosphere, so it can be as fun and rewarding as possible – there is nothing more important to the learning process than fun! I have performed in numerous jazz groups, from small combos to big bands, including playing alongside Alan Barnes, making multiple appearances at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and touring Belgium in the Spring of 2018. My work is not limited to the jazz genre. I held a residency at Southampton’s Café Parfait nightclub for over two years, performing alongside house and guest DJs, and I regularly perform in a variety of Pop and Soul bands. Highlights include performing with CJ Edwards (The Voice 2013) at the Bournemouth International Centre to over 5000 people, and recording with Roxi Drive on her single ‘1985’. In 2020, I completed a master’s degree in jazz performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where I studied under Jean Toussaint and Julian Siegel.

Learning an instrument should be a fun, rewarding experience. The positive, encouraging atmosphere in all of my lessons, combined with putting your music tastes first when it comes to choosing pieces to learn, ensures that this is the case. There is nothing more important in the learning process than enjoyment! Everyone’s taste in music is different, and I always put your tastes first, using pieces you love to unlock your creativity, be that through improvisation, composition, or great expression of written music. I have a purpose-built studio for online tuition featuring state-of-the-art equipment so that even online, through Zoom/Skype, I can offer the best tuition possible. Dedicated studio microphones for my voice, and each individual instrument, means that audio is always crystal clear, and multiple professional-grade cameras allow me to always show you exactly what you need to see. For students in or near Tower Hamlets who would prefer face-to-face lessons, I can travel to you. If you’re interested or have any questions, please get in touch. There is no obligation; all it will cost is your time!

My name is Blake and I retired almost 2 years ago aged 65 and decided I would give myself the challenge of learning the saxophone and was put in touch with Josh through contacts at the University of Southampton. I started lessons with Josh basically the day I retired and have been tutored by him every week since. I have never played a musical instrument before and have found it very difficult starting from ‘scratch’ but with Josh’s calm but firm approach, I feel I am progressing well. We have worked our way through about three quarters of the Abracadabra Saxophone book, including Grade 1, 2 and some of 3 scales and arpeggios with the last pieces of music being ‘Greensleeves’, ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Hello Dolly’, ‘Swing Low’ and ‘Yesterday’.
I feel without Josh’s patient tuition, I would not have progressed from knowing nothing about music to now being able to read music and apply the correct breathing techniques i.e. how to breath, how to control my breathing, where to breath and also importantly how to understand rhythm with dynamics including even a bit of swing.
I would personally recommend him to anybody wishing to learn the saxophone.Josh was very friendly and made me feel at ease, which was great given it was my first time ever holding a sax! He talks you through everything in a logical and easy to understand manner. Would definitely recommend.
