About Oceana

Find Your Authentic Voice with Oceana Dix

Hi, I’m Oceana. I’m a Toronto-based vocal coach, singer, actor, and performance mentor with over 16 years of experience and a Master of Arts in Musical Theatre.

I work with singers of all levels, from complete beginners exploring their voice for the first time to experienced performers preparing for auditions, recordings, or stage work.

Many people come to singing lessons because they feel:

• stuck in their voice
• unsure where to start
• afraid of sounding “bad”
• disconnected from their natural sound

My approach focuses on freedom, technique, and self-trust. Singing is not about forcing your voice into a rigid mold. It’s about developing healthy technique while discovering the sound that is truly yours.

As a transgender performer and voice teacher, I also bring experience in gender-affirming voice work and creating safe, respectful spaces for Queer, trans, and neurodivergent artists. Many of my students have felt misunderstood in traditional training environments, and my studio is built to support exploration rather than judgment.

Alongside teaching, I am an active performer working in music, film, and live performance. This means my coaching is grounded not only in vocal science, but also in the realities of performing and expressing yourself on stage and on camera.

Whether you’re singing for fun, developing your craft, or rediscovering your voice after years of silence, I’d love to help you grow.

Lessons are available in Toronto’s Church-Wellesley Village or online worldwide.

What Singing Lessons with Me Look Like

Every voice is different, so lessons are tailored to your goals and experience level.

Together we may work on:

• vocal technique (breath, resonance, range, stamina)
• improving pitch and tone
• building confidence and stage presence
• audition preparation
• songwriting or artistic expression
• gender-affirming voice exploration

Many students start lessons simply because they love music but never had a place to explore their voice. Others come with more specific goals like performing, recording, or strengthening their technique.

You do not need to be “good” at singing to start. Curiosity is enough.

Lessons are welcoming for:

• beginners and hobby singers
• musicians and songwriters
• actors and performers
• trans and non-binary students seeking respectful voice training
• anyone who wants to feel more confident in their voice

My goal is to create a learning environment where technique, creativity, and personal expression can grow together.

If you’d like to see my work as a performer, I’m happy to share my singing and acting demo reels.

I offer a free consultation so we can talk about your goals and see if we’re a good fit.

Your voice isn’t something that needs to be fixed.
It’s something waiting to be developed.

  • 1. When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

When I was a small child, I would entertain my family by pretending I was an opera singer. I was lucky enough to have family and friends to support me, as I was put into choirs and classical voice lessons shortly thereafter.
  • 2. What makes you passionate about your subject?

We have been singing since the dawn of civilization. Like many of the arts, it has the power to heal and to express things that words simply cannot. If I can help people to believe that they can express themselves freely, I will be so happy.
  • 3. What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I’m inspired by those students who are able to come out of their shells and to discover that they have capabilities beyond even their own expectations. A breakthrough isn’t just the sudden feeling of “I hit that note for the first time”(though that is great!); it can also be something to do with confidence, expression, or style.
  • 4. Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Many! We all need those role models. Where would I be without them?! My elementary school music teacher, Mrs. Snortland, followed my class into middle school, and I was just so happy that she did! She is the first person to insist that my calling is in music, even very vocally to my parents.
  • 5. What are your keys to success?

Relaxation is key. Our lessons are a space of no judgment. We will make strange noises and mess up endlessly, because that is how we as humans learn.

I keep forward momentum by adhering to a “teaching triangle” model. I first assess the condition being presented to me, then consider the cause of that condition, and consult the student on how we can improve or tweak the condition.
