About Joseph
I earned a Master in Music Performance degree with High Distinction from Indiana University, one of America's most prestigious music schools. Since then, I have worked professionally with a number of internationally recognized and highly regarded ensembles and artists. Orchestras I’ve worked with include the San Francisco Symphony, with conductors including Michael Tilson-Thomas, the San Francisco Opera Orchestra with Donald Runnicles; Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra with Nicholas McGegan; the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra with Kees Bakels, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Fabio Luisi, and Lorin Maazel. The knowledge I’ve gained from working in those fine ensembles with noted conductors has given me a rich education and understanding of the symphonic repertoire from the Baroque period through all styles leading up to the most contemporary compositions.
Other orchestral experience includes extensive theatre work and recording experience, with the Skywalker Symphony (George Lucas’ California ranch sound stage) and numerous smaller recording sessions. My recording experience includes working in the jazz and rock genres, as well. As an electric bassist, recording studio work includes playing for Joe Walsh of The Eagles. I was a member of the critically acclaimed San Francisco-based jazz quartet, Dan Hicks and the Acoustic Warriors. In that group, I performed in concerts across the United States and in Asia. Dan Hicks and the Acoustic Warriors were a featured act on the nationally syndicated TV program “Night Music hosted by David Sanborn,” and in the major motion picture “Class Action,” directed by Michael Apted. I have done a large number of recording sessions, as a freelance artist, for various jazz and pop artists, both in California and throughout my time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
As a jazz bassist in I was the designated solo upright bass and electric bass player for the Malaysian Philharmonic. In that role, I performed with Branford Marsalis, New Orleans trumpeter Byron Stripling, conductor/arranger Jeff Tyzik, drummers Butch Miles and Bernie Dressel, conductor/composer Carl Davis, keyboardist Bobby Floyd of the Count Basie Orchestra, and others. I was the co-founder of a highly popular jazz ensemble in Malaysia, The Swing Kings of Kuala Lumpur. That group focused mainly on acoustic swing music such as the compositions of The Hot Club of France. I composed and arranged a number of pieces for that ensemble.
As an educator, I have worked since 1979, while still doing my Bachelor’s studies. At that time, I acted as a stand-in for my University professor to coach the Wichita Youth Orchestra. Since then, I have always been involved with coaching and tutoring youth orchestras; from Kansas to Michigan to California to Hong Kong to Malaysia. I have held the post of Lecturer in Music at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Duties as Lecturer included teaching private lessons and coaching ensembles. I have worked as a music teacher in the California public school system in the Richmond District of Northern California; and as a private teacher in double bass, electric bass, guitar, and theory since 1980.

I tailor lessons to the students needs and aspirations, as much as possible. For those studying symphonic bass, which is my specialty, I suggest a balance of repertoire, etudes, and solo pieces. Jazz and rock lessons are balanced between method books, repertoire, and improvisation. Theory is studied with extant literature. Listening to live and recorded music is an important part of every musician's daily progress.
