About Darren

Darren Eedens has been a passionate touring performer, producer, songwriter and teacher for over a decade after embarking on his first tour in 2009. Having started teaching his first lessons 20 years ago. Since that time he has performed all over Europe, Scandinavia, North America and South Korea. Americana and bluegrass is his lifelong love. Having been given a banjo by his Grandmother when he was a teenager, nobody knew then there would be no looking back. He began by teaching himself, and learning by listening to the greats, going to create his own bands and perform/record with many others. Always striving to gain and share information about the instrument, technique and playing, Darren can help with any questions and has given workshops at festivals. He graduated from Fanshawe College in London Ontario with a degree in Music Industry Arts. He performs with his own solo band Slim Pickin’s, his bluegrass band Taff Rapids Stringband and his banjo and fiddle duo Grubb & Eedens, and hosts Cardiff's only regular bluegrass concert. With a home studio set up, including a high definition Camera, lessons can happen with ease from all over the world. He has had students in Europe, America and even as far as India! Whether you’ve never held the instrument or are trying to get to that next level, reach out and learn from someone who has dedicated their life to the instrument.

About the lesson

No matter your age or ability level my goal is to help you on your musical journey, teaching the fundamentals and correct technique to avoid bad habits down the line. Teaching how to play out of other positions, scales/chord shapes, and more! I am passionate about the banjo, I live and breathe for the instrument. So it would be my pleasure to help you, at any level, with your playing in the Scruggs, Melodic, Single String, Clawhammer styles. I cater every lesson to the individual student, and can help you reach your playing goals. I have a lot of fun teaching, and really enjoy seeing people progress!

Perfect! Great first lesson from Darren, what a brilliant tutor, i never even held a banjo properly before but he has given me the confidence and enthusiasm to want to do more and more....i'm working on those rolls every day now....

Perfect! Darren is very clear at explaining everything you need to know, breaking things down into easy to understand bite sized chunks, or rolls in the case of today's lesson. Looking forward to the next one already!

Darren is great at explaining how music works as well as teaching techniques and songs.
I have learnt a lot of useful and interesting things from him during our lessons.
He is also very reliable when it comes to communication. I have emailed him questions out of lessons on ovations and he's never taken more than a day to get back to me.
I also like how flexible Darren can be with his lessons. He is always willing to go over pieces of music I've found and brought to the lesson.
