About Alan

Hello! I'm Alan, and I'm the Principal Bass Trombonist of the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Alongside that, I'm an active freelance professional trombone player in Scotland, the UK, and across Europe. I graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2020 with a 1st Class with Honors Bachelor of Music (Performance) degree, and recently moved to Edinburgh after 10 years being based in Glasgow.

Though I spend most of my time performing in classical orchestras, a lot of my playing experience and work has been in:
- Session recordings (Film/TV/Video games)
- Musicals
- Big bands/jazz
- Brass bands
- Historic instrument chamber music

About the lesson

As someone with a musical background in a variety of styles and contexts, I put playing the music the learner wants to play at the center of my teaching! I believe that by focusing predominantly on musicality in practice and performance, technique and confidence will follow.

Whether you are a beginner, a learner already on your trombone learning journey, or a returning player simply wanting a refresher, my lessons can be engaging, fun, and tailored to your needs.

You may be preparing for an exam, an audition, a concert, or just playing for the sake of it. In all cases, I hope I can help keep the trombone a great outlet to return to.

I like to play the trombone myself in lessons (or piano for accompanying) as bouncing musical ideas off experienced players is engaging and useful for students, and group play (duets most likely) is a fun way to build aural skills.

I teach:
- Trombone, beginner to university (advanced, grade 8+)
- Music theory as necessary

As a tutor, I have 6+ years of freelance one-on-one experience, including dedicated teaching modules from my time studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
I also have broad experience running workshops and group classes across several age groups and levels. I have run classes through the RCS in primary schools, with the Tinderbox Collective in community libraries, and in secondary schools privately.

Lessons can be:
- 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, 1 hour 30 minutes

I will happily teach at the student's home, online, or at a secondary location that's convenient for us both (the trombone is a bit loud for my home I'm afraid!). I'll also happily provide physical materials (e.g. music stand) on request.

Details

My 5 and 10 hour bundle rates are in line with my in-person hourly rate, and come to this value:
£220 for 5 hours = £44/hour
£430 for 10 hours = £43/hour

If you were interested in purchasing a bundle for webcam lessons, these can be adjusted down accordingly to these rates:
£195 for 5 hours = £39/hour
£380 for 10 hours = £38/hour

These 5 and 10 hour bundles can be divided up however we negotiate. (With a maximum individual session length at 1 hour 30 mins)

I have chosen my teaching rates based on the current Musicians Union rates of pay for individual lessons/small groups, linked below.
