About Jessica
Hello, I am Jess! I have spent fifteen years in academia pursuing my love for history and writing. I was born and raised in Montana. I attended Montana State University, where I received a B.A. in History and graduated Summa Cum Laude. My anglophile interests led me to London, England, for my M.A. in Early Modern History at King’s College. In 2021, I graduated with my PhD in British History from Louisiana State University. Currently, I am teaching online as an adjunct history professor at Liberty University.
I have taught and developed numerous courses on many subjects, including any dimension of European History (ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern), World History, and American History. My classroom is a distinct space where student-scholars come alongside one another to create, expand, and further knowledge. History is not the mote memorization of facts and dates. It is part of the humanities, an investigation and reconstruction of the past that requires imagination and interpretation of past events. It is the story of humanity in all its complexity, tragedy, and beauty.
As a history professor, I teach students that history matters because it forces us to take our eyes off ourselves and look to one another. In today’s competitive job market, students must develop the capacity for self-direction, utilizing history to understand how humanity dealt with their present and future, which arms them with greater knowledge of how to deal with their current, present, and future.
So, when asked by students and parents why they study history, my answer is that it teaches human imagination, empathy, and intuition that, in the immediate future, we can be sure robots will never be able to develop.
As a professional historian, I have published articles, edited, and proofread numerous undergraduate essays and university applications. Moreover, having studied and obtained my M.A. abroad, I possess extensive knowledge about university systems in different countries and can tailor your application to their expectations and guidelines.
I look forward to tutoring your student and helping them achieve their goals!

To imagine a better future, we have to imagine the past. My history tutorials will improve your student's grades by focusing on the historian's craft, including critical and analytical thinking, investigation, and interpretation. I tailor each tutorial to my tutee's goals by providing them the opportunity to use and build on their existing resources, such as textbooks, lecture notes, past exams, essays, or homework, and working per the exam board's specifications and guidelines. I reinforce learning by asking both open-ended and probing questions. Open-ended questions require more than a yes/no answer and foster and engage with critical and analytical thinking skills. Probing questions follow up on a student's contribution and create an opportunity for further investigation and interpretation. While I will clarify or explain a topic if my tutee has not been introduced to a critical point or piece of information necessary to understand the concept, I first seek to rephrase or reword questions to elicit a response.
Our sessions will begin with an introductory conversation, which I call an 'entrance ticket.' It is a data touchpoint designed to follow up on the previous session and assess the student's current understanding or comprehension of the subject or topic we are covering for the day. I start by asking basic questions to gauge what the student knows, such as vocabulary, names, and dates, so we can progress toward new ideas and make relevant connections with the session's learning objective and its topic or focus. Depending on the student's learning style, I will incorporate written or visual models to reach the session's learning goal. To encourage independent and creative learning, I provide students plenty of opportunities to practice the skill or concept or aid the tutee in finding other resources and developing appropriate study strategies. Our session will conclude with a formative assessment, or 'exit ticket.' This allows the student to demonstrate their progress toward mastery of the skill or content and ensures that the student reaches the learning goal of our session.
