About Jess
I set out to get a PhD in Physics from Berkeley in order to be a more credible science fiction writer, but I discovered a new experimental technique using muons to study chemistry and condensed matter physics, and felt like a character in my own SF novel; the next thing I knew, I was a Professor with 40 years of teaching under my belt and over 400 publications in refereed scientific journals. So at 65 I retired to get back to work on my original career choice. I quickly discovered that novel writing is as challenging as Physics research and that I had trained myself to get right to the point -- the worst possible habit for a novelist. So I slipped back into short stories and poetry. Why am I telling you all this? Because the instructions say to "inspire confidence, establish your legitimacy and reassure students of your professionalism," and I'd much rather you knew who I really am.

I aim to listen carefully to your questions and answer them as succinctly as possible, but sometimes I get carried away and try to tell everything at once. Just raise your hand to stop me. ;-)
I promise to be honest and considerate in my feedback, insofar as those two attributes are mutually consistent. (In case of conflict, honesty wins.)
Because writing ability is the single most important skill of a scientist, one assignment will be to write a poem about Physics. I'm serious!
I can teach to any level of prior knowledge of Physics, from "none at all" to upper division undergraduate Physics courses. If you don't know Algebra or Calculus, I can help you learn the essentials required for Physics.
This should be FUN. If it's not fun for you, you should find another tutor; I certainly will decline to continue if it's not fun for me!

Jess is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was Prof Emeritus University of British Columbia, Dept of Physics and Astronomy with outstanding credentials in his field. He has recently given three popular classes at Elder College, University of Vancouver Island that I thoroughly enjoyed. He is very well read, and engages students who are willing to put in the effort to learn. He is a personable presenter with a subtle intelligent humour.
With empathy for the less fortunate I consider him a gentleman and scholar.
Signed J.E.TOSNEY B.Sc., M.Sc., P.Eng, FCIMHave known Jess for at least 8 years. We belong to a Futures discussion group. He is a retired Physics professor with many journal publications. Would happily have him tutor my younger self or my children. Jess is a balanced gentle person knowledgeable in many fields of discussion.
