About Awie

I started my IT career in 1972 when I was registered as a Computer science student at a South African university. After I have completed my Bachelor's and Honors degrees in Computer Science, I started working in the private sector as a programmer/systems analyst. As an employee of a large IT company, I got involved in the development and implementation of Information Systems. I act in many cases as project leader/project manager of these projects. My involvement in this field motivated me to study and do further research in Information Systems. I completed my Master's degree in Information Systems in 1981 at the University of South Africa (UNISA). After a very fruitful career in the private sector as project manager and manager of training development for IT-professionals, I decided to join academia because of my love for teaching. In 1992 I was appointed as a senior lecturer at the Informatics Department at the University of Pretoria. I completed my PhD in Informatics/Information Systems in 1998, after which I got promoted to the level of associate professor. To summarise, my working experience in IT spreads over 13 years, whilst my teaching experience spreads of 32 years.

About the lesson

The methods of teaching I prefer is contact sessions, although I am also very comfortable with virtual contact (for example Blackboard, Zoom etc.). The virtual class approach was especially convenient during the lockdown time. Individual contact between student and lecturer is sometimes also necessary if a student needs further help with a specific topic.

I base my classes on theory, case studies and published academic articles as well as practical examples. In the IT field which moves very fast and which is very dynamic, it is essential to do proper research on each topic before I prepare my final slides for a lecture.

I regard group work or group discussion (based on quality questions about the topic) as essential for student learning and it forms normally part of my lectures. I believe that group work, if well controlled, can enhance the learning experience for the student.

I also regard interaction during class sessions between myself and students as essential.
