About Maria

My passion for teaching began early, and I still enjoy seeing the moment a student realises they can truly speak and understand another language. I am a qualified French and Italian tutor with over 20 years’ teaching experience and a Master’s in Modern Languages from the Sorbonne in Paris. A native French speaker from Paris, I have taught in France and the UK, in schools, private language centres and with corporate clients. I am also the author of Unforgettable French and other acclaimed teaching books, now used by schools across the UK and internationally, and recognised by TES (Times Educational Supplement) for their practical results.
My aim as a teacher is to make the learning process clear, logical and enjoyable. My method blends structure with smart memory techniques, helping students connect new words and grammar to familiar ideas so they stick. For example, to remember that cher (pronounced “share”) means expensive, think of sharing the cost of something costly. By creating these vivid associations, learning becomes active, creative and intuitive. Lessons follow a steady progression, with each new concept building on what’s already understood, giving students a solid foundation and lasting confidence. Over the years I have worked with learners of all ages - from young beginners to exam candidates and professionals - always adapting my approach to suit each individual’s needs and goals.

About the lesson

Each lesson lasts at least an hour and is carefully structured to maximise learning and progress. Lessons are conducted mostly in French, so you can think and speak in the language from the start. Sessions combine clear explanation, speaking practice and interactive exercises, with concise notes provided afterwards so you can review and retain what you’ve learned. I use my own published materials alongside tailored resources such as flashcards, listening activities and targeted practice tasks.
If you are preparing for an exam, lessons are focused on your specific requirements, building both fluency and exam technique to help you achieve your best results. I successfully prepare students for 11+, 13+, GCSE, iGCSE, A Level, IB, the French Baccalauréat, as well as adult learners aiming to build or refine their skills for travel, work or personal interest. Lessons are supportive, interactive and designed to make French something you can truly use.

When I began lessons with her in French aged 11 she was wonderful at giving me confidence and helping me to excel in the subject at school. Later, when I needed help with Italian, she was great too. I took both my French and Italian GCSEs a year early thanks to her help, and received an A* in both. She also helped me as I went on to take both languages at AS Level.
