About Niamh
I am a Psychology graduate and Student Learning Disability Nurse with a particular interest in supporting children and young people with additional support needs (ASN/SEND). I am passionate about helping children feel understood, confident and capable in their learning, particularly those who benefit from a patient, encouraging and individualised approach.
I graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a BA (Hons) Psychology degree, achieving a 2:1 (68%), and I am currently completing a Bachelor of Nursing in Learning Disabilities at Edinburgh Napier University, where I am predicted to achieve a Distinction. My studies have developed my understanding of child development, communication, learning, behaviour and how support can be adapted to individual needs.
I have over three years of experience providing one-to-one support to a child with additional support needs, alongside experience in childcare and ASN/SEN education. This experience has strengthened my ability to build trusting relationships, communicate clearly and adapt my approach to suit different abilities, personalities and learning needs.
I also have a strong and varied academic background. I achieved 8 A grades at National 5 in Mathematics, English, Biology, Modern Studies, French, Spanish, Drama and Business, as well as 5 A grades at Higher in English, Drama, RMPS, Modern Studies and Business. I also hold a 120-hour TEFL/TESOL qualification, providing additional training relevant to English, communication and learning support.
Alongside my academic achievements, I have a strong interest in research and evidence-based practice. During my Psychology degree, I presented my undergraduate research at the British Psychological Society Scottish Branch Undergraduate Conference, and my research was subsequently published in the British Journal of Educational Studies.
I am friendly, patient and approachable, and aim to create a relaxed and supportive environment where children feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and learning at their own pace. My goal is not only to support academic progress, but also to help children develop confidence, independence and a positive attitude towards learning.

My lessons are designed for children and young people who benefit from patient, personalised and individualised learning support. I have a particular interest in working with children with ASN/SEND and adapting sessions around their communication, confidence, attention, abilities and individual learning needs. I have over three years of one-to-one experience supporting a child with additional support needs, alongside experience in childcare and ASN/SEN education. My Learning Disability Nursing studies have further developed my understanding of communication, development, learning disabilities and person-centred support.
For younger children, I can support English, reading, literacy, homework, schoolwork and primary-level Mathematics. I can also help children develop confidence, organisation, study habits and independence with their learning. I am particularly interested in supporting children who may find traditional classroom approaches difficult or who benefit from having information broken down into smaller, manageable steps.
For older pupils, I offer support in Psychology, English, Biology, Modern Studies, Business and Drama, as well as essay writing, study skills, revision and exam preparation. My Mathematics support is focused on primary-school level.
Sessions are usually 60 minutes and are adapted to the individual student. I use clear explanations, discussion, examples, activities, practice questions and retrieval techniques, while allowing students time to process information and ask questions. My aim is not simply to help a child complete their homework or prepare for a test. I want them to understand what they are learning, develop confidence in their abilities and gradually become more independent learners.
