About Luke
Hi!
I am excited to potentially work with students looking for help in all aspects of English Language Arts. I am a published poet with two collections of poetry on the shelves at Barnes & Noble. I also work with a co-op of teen artists who write and perform spoken word poetry. I have been teaching in an urban high school for over twenty years, using my out-of-the-box content and high-energy delivery style to keep students of ALL ability levels engaged. I have even taught students who have gone on to Ivy League colleges like Princeton, Harvard, and Brown.
I have traveled around the U.S. working for a company called WestEd, teaching other teachers how to teach reading and writing. I like to use super-engaging content like true crime serial killer stories and teen memoirs to get my students interested in a variety of topics. I have developed lessons and units on all sorts of topics ranging from "Eminem -- From Street Rat to Rap God" to "Frida Kahlo -- Behind the Brow".
With my lessons, you know you will always get some fresh and engaging content and learn some REAL skills to improve your reading and writing abilities. Also, I've got a few tricks I've learned about how to boost standardized test scores, including ACTs and SATs.

My lessons are succinct and direct-to-the-point.
I provide exemplar models of what top-notch work looks like in the content areas, oftentimes CREATING those exemplars LIVE as part of the lesson. A typical lesson contains a 5-minute starter or "appetizer" question, then delves into some guided skill-work, and finishes with the student creating a product or practicing the skill independently.
My assignments are quirky and out-of-the-box and I use content that is instantly engaging, like: true crime, pop culture, movies & tv.
My lessons can reach beginning learners and more developed students alike. I have vast experience in differentiating difficulty levels to match the needs and interests of my learners.
My specialty is in teaching new or developing writers to write like PROFESSIONALS, not like students. We look at the way REAL, published, loved and respected writers create. We explore elements of style and voice so that YOUR writing will stand out as unique and polished.
