About Iona

I am a sociology and education specialist, with a degree in sociology and anthropology and an MA in Education and Social Justice. I am an experienced educator with a wide range of teaching experience; prior to teaching sociology, I taught English, and study skills to adults. My most recent teaching focus has been on teaching A-level and IGCSE sociology. In my most recent teaching post, I taught the Cambridge syllabus for 6 years at an International school. I have also taught AQA sociology: this year, I marked one of the A-level exam papers, Education and Theory and Methods, which gave me insight into applying the mark scheme and direct experience of what examiners need to see. I am excited about doing some individual tutoring, and I would particularly love to tutor students who are independently studying sociology, but I am also happy to support students who are taking the subject at school or college and just need a bit of extra support.

About the lesson

I have a positive collaborative attitude and I am skilled at assisting students of all levels to succeed. In an initial free meeting, we would discuss your individual needs, and make a rough plan of the topics and areas you wish to focus on. Typically a one-hour lesson would include some directed recall of content, reading and discussion and participatory activities. We might finish off planning a relevant exam question together. Every session will be shaped by your needs and preferences, and we will set and review targets each week. I would typically set homework, and expect you to read and prepare for the session.
