About Russell
I am a qualified teacher (PGCE 1992) with 34 years' experience of teaching A-level and GCSE sociology in secondary schools and FE colleges. As well as extensive classroom teaching experience, I have tutored online since 2020 (5* reviews can be viewed on 'tutorful').
My first degree was in Sociology, graduating in 1989, therefore my sociology experience covers a near 40 year period. I currently teach part-time in a successful Leeds school, where I was Curriculum Team Leader/Head of Department for 15 years until my semi-retirement in 2023.
I have excellent subject knowledge of AQA sociology (GCSE and A-level), having exclusively taught this specification for 34 years, and I therefore only offer tutoring for AQA. I combine my knowledge with an ability to break sociology down into manageable and accessible ideas. I place great emphasis on the skills needed for success in sociology, such as essay writing and answering shorter mark questions. Crucially, I endeavour to make online lessons dynamic, active and interesting for students.
Alongside my teaching and tutoring, I have recently completed an M.A. in Popular Music and Culture, a course that gave me the opportunity to combine my passion for music and sociology. I am shortly embarking on a PhD, putting the theory of lifelong learning into practice at the age of 59!

I always aim to engage students by making sociology relevant to their own life experiences where possible. Not surprisingly, an interested student learns more effectively and makes greater progress.
I use a variety of teaching techniques and resources designed to meet the needs of a range of learners. Depending on the specific needs of a student, a typical lesson may involve an explanation and interactive discussion of key sociological concepts/theories, or may involve a step by step breakdown of an exam question. Model answers (for short questions and essays) are regularly used to demonstrate key skills needed for exam success. Particularly when teaching A-level sociology, I also provide students with relevant contemporary material (such as online newspaper articles) as a means to help achieve the highest grades.
A typical lesson lasts for one hour, although this is flexible, depending on the needs of the student.
I consistently help both GCSE and A-level sociology students to achieve excellent grades, including the 2025 A-level and GCSE cohorts.
