About Lucy

I love maths and studied at Cardiff University, followed by a PGCE at Cheltenham and Gloucester College. I taught in high school for 10 years and have been tutoring for at least a further 10 and have completed numerous courses in education and learning styles. I have taught students from 11 to adult for a variety of different exam courses. I have been an exam marker for both AQA and Pearson for approximately 20 years and mark the GCSE every year. This gives me valuable insight into the specifications and requirements of these exams.

About the lesson

I offer 1-1 sessions to KS3, GCSE and IGCSE students and Adults in their own homes or online. As a subject specialist I can cover all topics and levels needed for these exams. I have a wealth of experience teaching and tutoring. I am a very approachable person and pride myself on my communication skills.

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I have always loved maths and teaching has enabled me to share that interest with others.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
My personal favourite is algebra, I enjoy the challenge of problem solving.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
At high school my maths teacher always challenged and stretched me to think outside the box.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Patience and understanding, I know many do not share my love of maths.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
I get great satisfaction from that moment something clicks for a student and they are thrilled to finally understand.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
In life there is always someone else who can do something faster or better than you, as you get older you learn to understand that this does not effect how you achieve personally.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
My passion is helping students grasp something they have tried many times but not got there before.
