About Ha
Chào các bạn, I’m Hà. I was raised in Saigon since I was 3 so I speak perfect Southern Vietnamese. I started teaching English since 2014 and Vietnamese since 2021. Now my passion of teaching Vietnamese outweighs teaching English, as I feel so rewarding helping people learn my mother tongue as well as our culture. I have a BA in English Linguistics and Literatures and a certificate of Teaching Vietnamese as a Foreign Language. I understand that if someone speaks their native language, that does not mean they know how to teach it. I always keep learning to update my knowledge and skills in teaching Vietnamese. For the school year 2023 - 2024, I was the Teaching Assistant for Vietnamese classes at University of Wisconsin - Madison, USA for the Fulbright Foreign Teaching Assistantship sponsored by the United States Department of State. I love reading. Recently, I have been interested in some classical Vietnamese literatures and books about Vietnamese language and cultures, there are always so many new things to learn. I also do yoga and have a cat, his name is Remi. I enjoy playing with him or sometimes teasing him.

My lesson contents are based on the textbook Vietnamese as a Second Language published by Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City to make sure there is a structured pathway for us to follow. However, I have my own designed slides to help build “scaffolds” for students and also to be flexible and easier to tailor the lessons to students’ needs and learning pace. The way I conduct the lessons is to focus on the student's speaking practice with real life situations and authentic language used by locals so that students will be able to communicate with Vietnamese folks smoothly. Students will be required to work on listening and reading as homework because that needs quite a lot of time to get better (especially listening skill) and it would be most efficient to work on their own (with my supervision). Students will also be able to join my Quizlet sets with audio where they can practice vocabulary on their phone/laptop conveniently with different activity forms that the platform offers to students. Vietnamese is a tonal language so its pronunciation is super important when you start learning this language. When learning pronunciation, you will be instructed with details and techniques on how to pronounce consonants, vowels, tones and how to combine them all together properly. While learning pronunciation, you will also be introduced to some basic words, phrases, structures to get familiar with how to use the language. After having a foundation of pronunciation, learning conversational Vietnamese would be more productive and from there you will get further in your Vietnamese learning journey. In my Vietnamese lessons, contents are always well-prepared and "scaffolded" suitably so that learners would not feel overwhelmed with the new knowledge but gradually acquire the language through different activities for vocabularies, phrases, structure patterns, cultural integrations in the language and of course conversational practices with real life contexts.
