About Simeon
I have a First in French and Art History from UCL and a PhD in contemporary French art and theory from the Courtauld Institute of Art. I hold Qualified Teacher Status and a PGCE (the two standard secondary school teaching qualifications) in MFL (French & Spanish) and have taught languages in the secondary school classroom (French yrs 7-11). I love to teach languages because they bring access to cultural understanding and also help pupils to think and work in more abstract ways with plenty of opportunities for those whose learning styles are more oral, verbal or visual. I have also taught university students studying Art History and Visual Culture as well as students of applied disciplines in what are sometimes called 'Contextual Studies' in the UK and USA since 1997. I can help with research skills, expression of visual thinking, with the construction and defence of historical arguments or arguments pertaining to value, critical and analytical writing and with the articulation of all ideas in appropriate, academic language. I have also worked as a graphic designer - mostly making books for use in education and exhibition catalogues for art galleries. French teacher. I am happy to work with you to improve fluency, accuracy, exam technique, conversational or business French.
If you need help preparing for exams I am here for you.
Depending on your goal, I want to build confidence producing language. That means we need to figure out how you might really want to use your French. Do you need to be able to order a meal or a train ticket? Do you need to talk about your family with a friend of exchange family? Would you like to know how to follow a recipe shared by a French friend who makes something amazing? Or are you just trying to earn as many marks as possible at GCSE?
Once we know what you need we can plan short, relevant lessons that help you get confident doing the task at hand and encourage you to use what you know more widely. No one finds learning lists of vocabulary meaningful or memorable. Putting things into context and using your knowledge meaningfully is what makes it stick...

Simeon is highly knowledgeable and committed French teacher. He is currently coaching my son for his French GCSE Oral exam and has not only led engaging and enjoyable sessions but has also pointed us towards some really helpful support materials. Thank you Simeon! I would certainly recommend you.
Simeon is extremely knowledgeable and has an inspirational and charismatic delivery style when presenting and delivering lectures or class teaching, tailoring his delivery appropriately to the student/s he is working with. This has included from first year undergraduates studying applied disciplines to art history graduates with diverse interests. This is clearly underpinned with a deep and thorough knowledge of his specialist subject areas which include Modern and Contemporary western practices as well as critical theory and art writing as a practice. His skills base is broad and his interest in Design and the application of a range of software packages to developing his own practice based work adds to what he has to offer.
He was exceedingly popular with students and they responded markedly under his assured tutelage. To Whom it May Concern:
I offer my unreserved recommendation of Dr. Simeon Hunter as a tutor in the this site program. Dr. Hunter and I were colleagues at Loyola University New Orleans for twelve years, which gave me ample opportunity to observe his very considerable teaching skills.
Dr. Hunter has a gift for clarifying difficult concepts, for seeing the 'bones' of a subject
and conveying that to students. He is now a graphic designer, in addition to holding a PhD in art history and he would be well able to help students in those disciplines, as well as in English and French, in which he is sufficiently fluent to have written his PhD in that language, as well as in English. While teaching art history at Loyola, Dr. Hunter spent an unusual amount of time essentially tutoring students in his classes in English as well as in art history, as he had perceived a pressing need for that assistance.
Both students and the administration of this site will find Simeon Hunter to be a reasonable and charming person, unusual in his ability to enjoy all kinds of people. His ready sense of humor and natural compassion will make his interactions with prospective students pleasant for all concerned.
If I may be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me. My email address is:
