About Helen
I am an enthusiastic and outgoing History teacher in London.
I have always wanted to teach and so before I graduated with a 2:1 in History, I worked part time as a tutor for Explore Learning. Now, I am a fully qualified Secondary History teacher with a PGCE and QTS from Southampton University, a Russell Group University and one of the leading teacher training institutes in the country.
I have taught History at a mixed comprehensive, which is one of the top schools in Westminster, for two years. As a result, I benefit from excellent CPD to keep my pedagogy and teaching and learning strategies up to date.
In addition to teaching, I am also employed by the exam board to mark papers in the holidays. As part of this I attend CPD lectures given by senior examiners, which gives me a clear understanding of what they are looking to award marks for within student responses. This experience has not only greatly shaped my teaching of GCSE History, but also means I have a selection of model answers to use that provide students with a clear understanding of how they should construct their essays.
I am friendly and approachable and I pride myself on the excellent rapport I build with students. I am incredibly passionate about History and I enjoy planning interesting and engaging lessons to share this passion with my students. I have extremely high standards and always hold my students to account for the work they have done. However, I also believe that learning should be fun and so use teaching methods that both capture the student’s attention and press them to think when they answer.

Whilst I tailor all of my lessons to the needs of my individual learner, I also have a wealth of resources and tried and tested teaching strategies to draw on. For example, living graphs are an excellent way to help students remember dates and events in a facile, fun, and long-term manner. Furthermore, diamond nine diagrams help students to prioritise factors, enabling them to draft answers for enquiry questions with ease. Indeed, I find essay writing skills are undoubtedly the most challenging aspect of History lessons for most learners. Practise questions are invaluable for this reason. Together, the student and I can practise 'chunking' the question, breaking down responses into steps, using scaffolding and worked examples to craft answers. Furthermore, feedback is one of the most valuable tools for students, and on and one on one basis, I can help students to see how they can improve their responses to get them marks in higher bands.
