About Edward

When I teach piano, I try to create a space where technical development and personal growth happen together—where students not only learn how to play, but also learn how to listen, adapt, and express. I believe music lessons should be engaging, challenging, and joyful. Every lesson I teach is shaped by who the student is, what motivates them, and how they learn best. For beginners, we often start with rhythmic games, easy improvisation, and call-and-response patterns before even touching sheet music. For more advanced students, I guide them through the intricacies of articulation, pedal usage, tension release, and style-specific interpretation—whether that’s Baroque counterpoint, Romantic lyricism, or 21st-century minimalism. Regardless of level, I use a wide range of tools: traditional scores, lead sheets, technology like rhythm trainers and notation apps, and listening assignments that broaden musical understanding. One of the most memorable experiences in my teaching career was helping a middle school student compose a piano suite based on the seasons. Over the course of six months, we developed each movement through a combination of chordal theory, emotional mapping, and improvisation—and it culminated in a confident performance at a school concert. I also prioritise metacognition—teaching students to think about how they practice, how they retain progress, and how they approach problem-solving at the keyboard. This empowers them to take ownership of their learning. My lessons always include reflection time and opportunities to make musical choices. Whether my students dream of conservatory, composing, or just enjoying piano as a form of self-care, I am committed to helping them discover what the instrument can mean in their lives and how to keep music as a source of connection and joy.

Teaching piano to me is about opening doors to self-expression, discipline, and artistic discovery. I approach each student as a unique individual whose musical journey deserves respect, encouragement, and challenge. My lessons emphasise a strong technical foundation—hand positioning, finger independence, rhythm, and sight-reading—delivered in a clear, supportive manner that builds confidence and skill progressively. I select repertoire tailored to each student’s interests, from classical pieces to modern pop and film music, making practice relevant and motivating. Music theory is woven naturally into lessons to help students understand and internalise the language of music, while improvisation and composition offer creative outlets that deepen engagement and musicianship. I prioritise teaching effective practice techniques to help students overcome plateaus and develop sustainable progress habits. Technology plays a helpful role in my teaching through recording tools and interactive apps that enhance feedback and skill development. One of my proudest moments was coaching a student through a challenging piece who, after months of steady work, gave a beautiful performance that showcased not only technical accomplishment but also genuine emotional connection. I aim to cultivate not only skilled pianists but inspired artists who find joy, confidence, and meaning in every note they play.
