About Jonathan
I love seeing you progress and improve. You might not feel it, but I can see it for sure. I was in your shoes once, but now I can give you all the support you need to make your experience of learning languages a positive one as it was for me. And who knows? Later on down the line you might just be able to use what you learned in a way that changes your life - I've used my languages to communicate with people, or work in, Europe, Africa, North America and Mexico! I wouldn't be who I am without these experiences, so open up your horizons starting with success in language learning.
I could tell you about the countless students I've taught and tutored that have exceeded their predictions with my help and gone on to be fluent users of the languages I teach - I am so proud of all of them. But, to give you one anecdote that sticks with me, I used to teach a young man (let's call him Alex), who had done Spanish A-Level and achieved one grade higher than he was predicted. A few years later, Alex returned to the school as an exam invigilator, making some money in the exam season, before going off travelling to Latin America (for the second time). As he was by now quite fluent in Spanish, he was handed the job of administering the A-Level language exams. He came to me after the listening exam, having sat and completed the paper himself, and asked me, "I just did the listening exam and it was bare easy. What were we getting so stressed out about back when we were in Sixth Form?" I knew then that I had done my bit to create a lifelong language-learner, and it made me burst with pride, for him and, more than a little, me too.

I'm a friendly and knowledgeable language tutor for your A-Level, GCSE or EFL needs. I've taught French and Spanish in the UK secondary school system, both public (Twyford CofE Academy Trust, to name one) and private (including Highgate School), for fourteen years, covering Years 7-13.
I have been a Head of Department twice, working very closely with AQA and Edexcel exam boards. On top of that, I've been a content creator for Spanish and French lessons for the new GCSE, meaning that I'm intimately involved at every level with exams and curriculum content for the subject. Additionally, I have lots of experience providing fun and fruitful online English (EFL) lessons to non-native speakers in Spain and China. I hold a CELTA qualification and have prepared and examined Cambridge English exams at B1 up to C2 level. So basically, I'm your one-stop shop for anything MFL or EFL, served up to you with a relaxed side and a sweet sense of humour!
I may be relaxed in my personal style, but believe me, the lessons will be carefully structured. Every student is different and I am totally open to adaptability, but there are certain things that simply work. We start with a recall task based on the previous lesson's content and any prior learning that will be relevant to the current lesson, before moving on to a vocab refresher. This will normally take the form of a fun, interactive activity or simple game (Beat the Teacher, Tetris, Roll the dice, to give you some examples). You will pre-learn the vocabulary as an independent study task between lessons (aka homework - sorry guys), so you are already prepped for learning before we have our session. Then we introduce grammar in the context of the words you have learned and perform comprehension (listening and reading) tasks to make the new material stick, before looking at an exam-style question related to the theme. We will often do simple production (writing and speaking) tasks within lessons, but we will also have lessons that are dedicated to language use, taking one specific question style from the exam and really getting into the details of how to maximise your marks in that area. If you're looking for pure exam practice, then we can extend the exam-centred approach to suit your needs, spending time on grammar and vocab only where it's necessary.
