About Luke

Hi there! I'm Luke, a Secondary teacher with 8 years of experience. I started my career in rural QLD, then moved to London. As an experienced Maths Tutor, I tailor my approach to suit each student. Some arrive with their classwork ready, while others need guidance to get on top of their Mathematics. My aim is to meet them where they are, drawing on my classroom experience for effective support. For those wondering about starting tuition, I recommend a 1-hour session per week initially. We can reassess as needed based on the student's progress, whether to increase, maintain, or reduce frequency. A structured session typically includes 30 minutes reviewing recent class material, 20 minutes previewing upcoming topics using the student's curriculum, and a final 10 minutes on retrieval tasks to reinforce previously covered concepts for better retention.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I graduated from teaching in 2016 and have tutored ever since. I enjoy using the knowledge that I've gained as a teacher help students one on one through tutoring.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I am a maths / HPE teacher so I love tutoring in these subjects. Additionally, I'm a trained science teacher and started off in Exercise Science at University so I love tutoring Biology.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes. All of my teachers were excellent. Particular my Maths teachers. I try to emulate their passion for making maths relevant to the 'real world' to engage the kids I tutor.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, organisation and an ability to present curriculum content in the best way for the individual in front of you.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Since I have started tutoring, I'm very accustomed to meeting a new student and the first thing they say to me is "I hate maths". No one hates maths, but everyone hates being confused. It's amazing how much a student's mindset can shift about a subject if they understand what they're doing, why and how they'll use the knowledge practically.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

My challenges stem from continuing to find exciting ways for students to engage in content that they historically deem boring, unnecessary or not necessary for them later in life.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is supporting students to see value in education and watching the momentum take over when they have a clearly defined goal to work for in a subject. That and I love sport.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

What makes me a Superprof is that I'm in the classroom day in day out seeing challenges that emerge in the school settings. I have the experience to address them one on one in a tutoring context.
