About Daniella

I am a qualified teacher with over twenty years experience in both the state and private sector. I have successfully worked with students from KS2 to KS5, giving them the knowledge and confidence to achieve their full potential at school. I have excellent understanding of the requirements of the major exam boards, which has enabled me to support and guide my GCSE and A-level students and as a result the vast majority of them have achieved their desired grades.

After an initial assessment and consultation with the student and their parents, I set up a personalised study plan with targets agreed by all parties. I work at the student's pace, ensuring in-depth understanding of the topics covered in the lesson. This is then followed up by homework activities in order to reinforce their understanding of the topic. All students have their preferred way of learning and I try to accommodate all types of learning styles to maximise their enjoyment of the lesson and aid their success in achieving their academic goals.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?I have been interested in maths since I myself was at school. I have always enjoyed the aspect of discovery and application of the concepts learnt as well as the real life applications of maths. Whilst working as a full time teacher myself I was always astounded at how well children responded to one-to-one sessions, which inspired me to gradually become a full time tutor.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I enjoy all aspects of maths but if I had to choose one area, that would be algebra. Not surprisingly, all my students are experts on algebra as I seem to have passed my enthusiasm for it to them. Of course, we do cover (and enjoy) all other aspects of the subject and I think the students find it reassuring that tutors too have types of questions they like more than others.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had a really inspirational teacher when I was in secondary school, who always encouraged and developed the students’ analytical skills and in my professional life I have always strived to be more like him. He was able to find the right balance between challenge and reassurance.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience and understanding of the students’ different ways of learning are in my opinion the most important qualities a tutor can possess. All children are different and learn differently so finding out ways that work for them and give them the confidence they need to feel successful is paramount.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

A student came to me after they had only achieved a grade 2 in their GCSE mocks 3 months before the exam. Having nearly turned them away as I thought it was a bit too late in the year to make a significant difference to their grade, I am so glad that I changed my mind and accepted the challenge. With hard work and perseverance on both our parts, they were able to achieve a grade 5 in the GCSE exams, which was absolutely amazing.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I wouldn’t say that there are challenges as such. Changing curriculums and expectations just mean that I have to always try to keep up to date with any new developments and continue to learn. At the moment I am working on familiarising myself with the new IB requirements to ensure that I offer my students relevant support.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Aside of maths, I absolutely love learning new languages – so far I have tried (and partially succeeded) to master German, Russian and a bit of Spanish, so my next challenge would be to read a book in Spanish.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

This is a hard question to answer but I do love being a part of the Superprof family and will soon be trying to connect with a Spanish teacher so I can experience things from the other side☺
