About Janie
I have my B.A. in French and Spanish and a M.A. in French Literature. I have taught French and Spanish at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas for 23 years, French at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado for 5 years, and English at the Université de Bordeaux in Bordeaux, France, for one year. I have also traveled extensively abroad and I took students on Study Abroad trips to Quepos/Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica from Texas Tech for two summers. I have taught well over 3000 students in my years of teaching and have helped all of them see languages in better light. Many have gone on to study abroad after our classes and some have majored or minored at college in the language after seeing that really learning how to speak another language can be life-changing.

I have taught French and Spanish at the college level for many years and have tutored at other levels as well. In my methodology, I emphasize speaking the language first, and then the understanding of grammar will come from learning how to speak. Language is not hard if you have the right approach, and I customize my approach to teaching according to how the student learns, so his or her own learning style is the vehicle to learning and not the book used to learn. The first thing I do is give a verbal test to each student to determine what his or her learning style is and we start from there. Each person really learns in a different way. I do not impose my way of learning on any student, but start from how each individual learns. I believe learning should be fun, and I make my classes and my tutoring sessions fun! This also helps engage the student in the language so even more learning will take place! Acquiring a language is a process, and I do understand that each person walks through this process at his or her own separate pace. I truly love to help each student discover his or her own pace of development in the process of really learning how to speak French or Spanish.
