About Dakota
I am a recent graduate with a degree in biology and minors in mathematics and statistics. I have been tutoring students in various subject areas ranging from history to geometry to chemistry for at least six years.
I have taught at least twenty students over the years between my own schooling. I have had students go from F's to C's in as little as two months, and had we begun tutoring earlier in the year these grades would have improved to A's and B's by the end of the academic year.
As a biology student, I conducted independent research in aquatic ecology measuring the abundance of aquatic insects from various freshwater locations in a restored headwater valley habitat over time. I applied statistical analyses to this research to determine if there was a significant change in the abundance as time progressed. While studying statistics, I analyzed real-world data using statistical computing software. While studying mathematics, I used geometry to find measurements for appliances; calculus to determine the time it would take to reach a certain destination when I did not have a GPS to make those calculations easy; and more.

I teach individuals and small groups ranging from middle school to college-level students. My teaching method does not focus on students getting work completed for a grade, but rather emphasizes that students understand the material at a deeper level so that they can build on the basics and apply what they learn to more difficult scenarios. Today's pedagogy seems to focus on telling students how to solve a specific problem without enforcing the "why" of how the method works. This approach fails to prepare students for encounters with problems whose solutions are not as simple as textbook examples.
