About Samuel
I have three years of experience as a volunteer and paid chess tutor, with students of all ages. I have played chess competitively for many years, placing highly in scholastic tournaments as a kid. Currently, my online ratings are above 2000, with hundreds of hours logged. I work as a freelance journalist in addition to tutoring chess players, and am a graduate of the University of Michigan with a BA in International Studies (c/o 2021). I'm excited to continue teaching the game I love, in-person or online, and know I can make you a better chess player!

Lessons are for beginning and intermediate players. I am available to meet in-person or virtually, using Google Meet and Lichess board editing software. My teaching philosophy is to build my students' confidence by bridging the gap between the opening and the endgame. The middle game is the most complex, least replicable part of gameplay, but becomes less daunting once you master the low-hanging fruit (basic opening strategy, pawn promotion, checkmating with King+Queen or King+Rook)! By learning how a chess game typically starts and ends, a beginner can gain a better understanding of when trading is beneficial, how to leverage a material advantage in the middle game, and when to go for checkmate. For intermediate players, lessons will revolve around positional play, attacking/defending pawn structures, and gambits. First, I will assess client's strengths and weaknesses by playing them in a game of chess, or looking through a recorded game of theirs. Next, I will devise lesson plans on topics tailored to the client. Clients also enjoy showing me recorded games of theirs, and having me walk through their mistakes and accuracies with them.

Sam has been tutoring me in chess for 8+ years. He’s a very accomplished player, but has an approach to teaching that is accessible for people of all skill levels. His approach is not prescriptive or formulaic — he’s very good at walking you through parallel scenarios and helping you weigh the pros and cons of each. In addition to being a great teacher, he’s also very fun to be around! I’d highly recommend him as a tutor for people of all ages and abilities..
I have known Samuel for over a decade, and in those years I have known him to be nothing but compassionate and morally sound. He founded and ran our school's chess club in high school, doing so with a natural sense of leadership and an expert tutoring technique. He has personally seen to my own chess knowledge improving a great deal, and I believe he can do the same for practically any beginner to intermediate player.
