About Marissa
I just graduated from UC Davis with degrees in Japanese and English literature. In my third year in college, I studied abroad in Kyoto, Japan, where I studied Japanese and discovered the challenges of learning a language. When I returned to Davis, my love for cultural exchange grew into a passion for helping students practice and become confident in English. I worked as a conversation partner for international students of all ages. My students came from Japan, China, Mexico, and many more countries. Although most of my teaching began in-person, I still keep in contact with many of my students and help with their English online. I have also coached students on college-level essays, which received high grades and acceptance rates. Even though I have graduated and moved from Davis, I hope to continue helping students develop their English conversation skills.

My teaching method is best for students who already have some English skill and are ready to take the next step to develop their fluency. I prefer to keep lessons casual and to tailor sessions to each student's needs. I hope to keep the lessons highly conversational and relaxed as if you are talking to a friend. Therefore, I can create topics according to the student's interests, which will help the practice be meaningful. In the past with my students, my casual approach gave them a better understanding of commonly used English. For example, I often taught many of my students California slang and speaking habits. As an English major, I can also help students with their writing and essay building if requested.
