Relevant Coursework

Genetics Lab
Conducted research analysing and sequencing a mutated version of the hilA gene in Salmonella
Isolated the hilA gene, which transcribes the virulence feature of Salmonella, from an E.coli plasmid
Sequenced the gene to identify the randomly inserted mutations which had inactivated the virulence factor
Studied the concepts of Mendelian and molecular genetics in detail

Advanced Organic Chemistry Lab
Designed an independent research project involving the synthesis of new compounds by modifying the existing molecular structure of ibuprofen
Mainly focused on pharmacology concepts involving the structure, function, discovery, receptors and metabolism of drugs
Additionally studied the biophysics of cell membranes with a focus on the electrophysiology of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor

Cellular and Molecular Biology Lab
Determined the concentration of rubisco, which is an enzyme involved in the photosynthetic fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide, in the chloroplast
Isolated and analysed chloroplast DNA to determine the number of copies of the gene encoding the large subunit of rubisco
