About Sharon

As an introverted individual, I find joy and rejuvenation in quiet moments spent with my family, my two young boys, and in personal hobbies like gardening, reading, and playing the piano. My passion for teaching and education led me from a Bachelor's degree in engineering to pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching after moving to the U.S. in 2018. It was through my years of tutoring secondary students in math that I discovered my true calling. This journey has given me a unique perspective, combining the practical problem-solving skills of an engineer with a genuine love for education, enabling me to help students not only understand math but also find confidence in their own abilities.

My primary teaching method is instead of simply giving a student the answer, I guide them through a series of questions that help them discover the solution themselves. This approach builds critical thinking and problem-solving skills, making them a more independent learner. I also use visual aids like diagrams, graphs, and digital whiteboards to explain complex concepts. I also employ a "chunking" technique, breaking down difficult topics into smaller, manageable parts. This prevents students from feeling overwhelmed and allows them to master each component before moving on. I also emphasize the connection between different mathematical concepts to provide a holistic understanding of the subject.

A typical 60-minute lesson follows this structure:

Check-in and Review (5 minutes): We'll start with a brief discussion about the student's current challenges and a quick review of the previous lesson's key concepts to ensure retention.

Guided Practice (25 minutes): We'll work through new problems together. I'll ask questions to prompt the student's thinking, correct misconceptions in real-time, and introduce new strategies.

Independent Practice (15 minutes): The student will solve a few problems on their own while I observe. This allows me to assess their understanding and identify any remaining knowledge gaps.

Concept Deep Dive and Application (10 minutes): We'll explore the real-world applications of the topic. For instance, when studying trigonometry, we might discuss how it's used in architecture or video game development. This makes the material more relatable and engaging.

Wrap-up and Homework (5 minutes): We'll summarize the key takeaways from the lesson, and I'll assign practice problems to reinforce the concepts before our next session.

What sets me apart is my focus on building confidence. Many students struggle with math not because they lack the ability, but because they have a fear of failure or believe they "aren't good at math." My empathetic and patient approach creates a safe learning environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth.

My lessons are for high school and early college students seeking to improve their understanding and performance in a variety of mathematics courses. This includes:

Middle School: pre-algebra, algebraic concepts, percentages, fractions, decimals, and basic statistics.

High School: Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus AB & BC
