To build the basis of an excelling learning journey the initial meeting is a key part to include for me. Discussing with the student areas they find difficult and learning approaches they find useful unlocks adaptable learning tailored to each individual student to ensure they get the most from each session.
Before each session I will be prepared with resources relating to the area in the subject they find difficult and use a blend of different learning approaches and review at the end of each session to gain understanding of whether the learning approach worked well or not in order to plan ahead for the next session.
Setting a SMART target prior to the beginning of the session and revisiting it at the end of the lesson to see whether the target has been met is a great way to highlight to the student that the hard work they are putting into the tutor sessions is paying off and each session the student is one step closer to meeting their desired grade in the subject.
To encourage learning to seem more fun than a chore I believe is extremely important. Wanting to learn and engage in a topic aids success and a student is much more likely to retain the information they learn if they gain an interest. As not all students are interested in the same topics/subjects integrating a student's own personal interests for example football in an exam style question can make it that much more interesting for the student.
