About Luke
I am a recent History graduate from the University of Bristol, who graduated with First Class Honours. My background in French began from when I moved to French-speaking Montreal, Canada, where, in accordance with Quebec province's legislation, I was required with no prior knowledge to have a minimum of 50% of my school lessons in French (including Maths and Science). I really do believe that this experience has given me a unique perspective on how best to learn a language (in an enjoyable way!).
In terms of prior teaching experience, I was asked to be a Subject Prompter for Modern Languages at my secondary school. This role consisted of aiding pupils at GCSE level in French, who found the subject more challenging and also suggesting changes in approach to the curriculum. In particular, I was asked to focus on helping these pupils with their French Oral examination, many of whom achieved their best mark in this section of the GCSE. Having thoroughly enjoyed this role, I am keen to take it up whilst I apply for jobs and graduate schemes starting in next September. In addition, I would be confident teaching at whatever level required by the student(s).
My proficiency in French is evidenced by my attainment of the top grade possible in all French public examinations when I returned to England; A* in A-Level French, Distinction in optional Institute of Linguists Continuation Course, A* in GCSE French. I have also previously worked as an intern for a French-speaking Clinical Research team of a pharmaceutical company in Paris.

Learning a language is very much a process, where all the skills you need (listening, speaking, writing, grammar, vocabulary etc.) are intimately connected, and therefore my lessons match this. Along with stressing the need for a firm grounding in grammar, I encourage my students, for example, to ask questions when they can in French. Even if it is just asking to turn on the lights or answer the door, I think it's important to get them thinking in French as much as possible whilst also making them more comfortable with the idea of making (inevitable!) mistakes. Lastly, I look to find an interest of theirs, something outside of the curriculum, that we can keep going back to and discussing in French, in the hope that they will also find some of their own time to go over this (for example, if they're a fan of film, finding them French films to watch over with subtitles, to then discuss for 5 minutes during a lesson is a great way of helping them advance).
