About Gib

Hi! My name is Gib, which is short for Gibson. And before you ask, I was not named after the guitar. My mom apparently just thought it would be a “cool guy name” – I’ll let you be the judge of that! Though not my namesake, I have definitely lived up to its associations. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 12, and have been in bands since around the same time. Growing up in Amsterdam, I had the privilege of seeing tons of shows at the amazing venues around the city and quickly gained an appetite for live performance and desire to go deeper into the world of music.

When I moved to the US at 18, I studied Music and Electrical Engineering at Wesleyan University, playing my first show in the same dingy dorm basement where MGMT played theirs. I spent my college years immersed in the indie music scene and honed in my skills both as a guitar player and a music producer, recording most of the student bands on campus, as well as my own.

Through Wesleyan’s community outreach initiatives, I taught local elementary and middle schoolers guitar and found my passion for teaching. Since my graduation in 2023, I have worked as a Music Technology teacher at Marymount High School and Pratt Institute, and continue to teach the engineering behind electronic instruments at various schools around the city – a subject which became my area of focus at Wesleyan.

I’m excited to share my knowledge and experience with you, and to get to know what really gets you excited!

Regardless of skill level (of which I welcome any and all!), a typical hour-long lesson with me covers three areas: playing scales, playing songs, and improvising. By playing scales, we learn the theory behind how notes relate to each other, and we train musical muscle memory. By playing songs (generally covers suggested by the student), we explore the ways that this theory exists in the real world, connecting us to the songwriters we love. And by improvising (which is WAY easier than it sounds!), we put this all into practice, growing our musical intuition and technique. Depending on your interest and ability, emphasis on these areas will change, but they will still form the basis for each lesson.

But overall, in a lesson with me, curiosity is the driving force! While every lesson is grounded in technique and structure, I’m always looking out for what specifically piques the student’s curiosity and directing the lesson to explore and understand that. Be it why a certain chord “hits” like that, or how all of your favorite artists’ songs are so insanely good, or how you can invert chords to change the direction and emotion of a song – I have the language and desire to help you really get it, whatever it may be.
