About Dan

Hi - I’m Dan, a recent graduate in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University. Since 2014 I have been a private tutor, a classroom assistant in two schools and a foreign language teacher in China. I have over 250 lessons and a 5-star profile on MyTutor ((concealed information) I have tutored 10 students through the TSA in the last 3 years achieving an 80% success rate.

I am also available for A-level tutoring in Politics, Economics and Philosophy.

About the lesson

Preparing for Oxford interviews is unlike anything else in education - with me, you'll have the help and advice of someone who has recently been through the process.

I am happy to help with all elements of the application process, from discussing personal statements to conducting mock interviews. Whilst I have session plans for each part of the application process, I will be flexible and adapt to your needs - we will maintain a dialogue to make sure you get the most out of our sessions.

If you're looking for help with your personal statement, we can discuss the initial ideas and how to effectively structure it with exemplars I will provide. If you have already made a start I can give annotations and feedback in whatever form best suits you.

TSA preparation will be divided into three elements: problem-solving, critical thinking and essay writing.

We will spend the first sessions going through the three types of problem-solving questions and seven types of critical thinking questions to establish a firm base. I will then teach some formal logic as this aids many students with answering critical thinking questions and is useful for first-year philosophy. I will then set the student timed TSA papers to do and we will go through them together in the lessons, doing exercises as and when we identify areas to work on.

Essay writing is a lesser component but we will still work on this by spending some time considering what the examiners are looking for in a 30-minute essay. We will then move on to you doing practice papers which we will go through together in our sessions. This has proved a highly effective way of working as it ensures we focus on the areas you find most challenging.

For interview preparation, we can discuss interviews generally, considering what the interviewers are looking to assess and how you can come across most effectively. We can also do mock interviews on specific subject matter (such as the content of your personal statement) with feedback and development points provided at the end of each session.
