About Desiree
I am a recent graduate from the University of Denver, from which I obtained my PhD in Chemistry. During my PhD, I served as a teaching assistant for General Chemistry, a non-major chemistry course, and an upper-division chemistry course. I was also a Gen. Chem. teaching associate for 1 year and 9 months at Cal Poly Pomona, where I did my Master's in Chemistry. I have also been doing chemistry research since I was in undergrad. My research I did during my PhD was on atmospheric chemistry, wherein I studied how atmospheric pollutants react and transform when exposed to sunlight.

I break each problem down into steps, starting with the fundamentals, and I help students understand why they're doing each step for a problem or question. I believe that knowing why helps solidify their learning of the material and makes them think critically about their approaches and answers. I like working off of a student's prior knowledge to gauge where they're at with the material before I provide any corrections and additional guidance, because I believe building on prior knowledge helps to anchor and retain new information. When tutoring in-person, I always have paper and pen or a whiteboard on hand to work out problems with the student. I can also tutor online, wherein I screenshare a Microsoft Word document to show and explain my work to problems that the student has questions on. My lessons are geared towards high school and college students taking general chemistry and algebra.
