About Maria

Maria Gomes is a London-based clarinet player with a diverse career as both an orchestral musician and a teacher. With over 12 years of teaching experience, Maria has shared her expertise through private lessons and at various music schools. She currently teaches at The Nucleo Project and City of London Academy Highbury Grove, as well as offering private lessons. Maria's orchestral experience spans across renowned ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Opera House, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra where she held the position of Trial Associate Principal Clarinet/E-flat Clarinet from 2021 to 2023. Notably, Maria Gomes has been selected as the MMSF Emerging Artist for the Philharmonia Orchestra for the 2022-2023 season. Maria earned her Bachelor's degree in Clarinet Performance from the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo in Porto under the guidance of esteemed teachers António Saiote and Nuno Pinto. Subsequently, she pursued a Master of Arts at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she distinguished herself with a Distinction and the prestigious DipRAM award under the mentorship of Christopher Richards, Mark Van de Wiel, Benjamin Mellefont and Chi-Yu Mo.

About the lesson

I am an enthusiastic teacher who has been teaching clarinet, saxophone and music theory for the past 9 years. I believe a good technique should be desired from the early stages, as much of the work we do will be to achieve it. I also think that making music should always be enjoyable, so you can expect our lessons to be a lot of fun. I am a very patient but rigorous teacher. I tailor each lesson to my students' goals, whether you are learning the instrument for pleasure or for grades. Not every student will become a professional musician, but I hope that by the end of our lessons there will be another music lover in the world!
