About Denise
As a nurse for 21 years, I was trained quarterly in this subject and working at the bedside gave me the opportunity to put this training to good use. Sometimes I got it right and other times by my patient ‘s response, I got it very wrong. All you need is a desire to learn to do well. There are no tests, only positive feedback. I am always open to students’ feedback to me as well. The wonderful thing about this type of communication is that you can carry it into your daily conversations with others.

Therapeutic communication is a specialized skill that we as healthcare professionals utilize so that patients understand that their needs are understood, that we empathize, and insures that patients walk away from their healthcare experience feeling they were provided with excellent care. Teaching includes role playing conversations and written materials for quick reference. Teaching also explores how our nonverbal communication conveys either a positive or negative message to patients.
Unconscious bias is purely that, it’s unknowingly having prejudices about patients based on race, gender identity, religion, mental health diagnosis, etc This training is intended for the student to explore their own biases through open discussion about student’s thoughts on the topic. Understanding of our own unconscious biases as healthcare providers leads to improved healthcare outcomes.
